If scientific enquiry feels overwhelming, start with one question.
You do not need to plan a huge investigation. Choose something children can observe, compare or test outside. You might ask which surface is warmest, which material is waterproof, where do we find the most minibeasts, which object rolls furthest, which plant has the biggest leaves or how do shadows change during the day?
In KS1, scientific enquiry is about helping children think like scientists. They need to ask simple questions, look carefully, use equipment where appropriate, make observations, compare what they find and talk about their results.

Which Surface Holds the Most Water?
Take children outside after rain or use small amounts of water safely. Ask them to compare different outdoor surfaces, such as grass, soil, paving, tarmac, wood, leaves or fabric. Children can predict which surface will hold water, which will absorb it and which will let it run away.

It is important to teach children to be gentle and respectful. Minibeasts should be observed carefully and returned to where they were found.

KS1 Scientific Enquiry and Forces
Forces can be explored outdoors through movement, ramps, rolling, pushing, pulling, sliding and balancing.
Children can investigate which object rolls furthest, which surface makes a toy car go faster, whether a steeper ramp changes the distance travelled or which objects are easiest to push or pull.
You might use planks, crates, toy cars, balls, hoops, sticks, cones and chalk marks.
Ask questions such as, which ramp made the car travel furthest, what happened when the ramp was higher, which surface slowed the object down, did the heavier object travel further, how can we make it fair?

How to Record Scientific Enquiry Outdoors
Recording in KS1 does not always need to mean long writing.
Children can record by drawing, taking photographs, making tally marks, using simple tables, placing objects in groups, making chalk marks, using stickers, talking to an adult or creating a class chart.
For example, if children are investigating minibeasts, they might make a tally of what they find. If they are comparing materials, they might sort them into waterproof and not waterproof. If they are observing plants, they might draw the same plant each week.
