Who are The Muddy Puddle Teacher outdoor learning events for?

Our events are designed for teachers, teaching assistants, Early Years practitioners, nursery teams, childminders, SEND professionals, outdoor learning leaders, school leaders and anyone responsible for supporting children’s learning and play.

You do not need to be an experienced outdoor practitioner to attend. Our events are suitable for complete beginners as well as educators who already teach outdoors and would like new ideas, greater confidence and practical inspiration.

I am an Early Years practitioner. Will the event be suitable for me?

Yes. Early Years and outdoor play are central to The Muddy Puddle Teacher Approach.

You will discover practical ways to support communication and language, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, early literacy, maths, creativity and understanding of the world through outdoor play.

The activities can be adapted for nurseries, preschools, Reception classes and childminding settings.

I teach in a primary school. Will the activities link to the curriculum?

Yes. Our training demonstrates how outdoor learning can support curriculum teaching across EYFS, KS1 and KS2.

Depending on the event, workshops may include outdoor maths, English, science, phonics, art, geography, history, wellbeing, SEND support and cross-curricular learning.

The focus is always on practical ideas that educators can adapt to suit their own children, curriculum and outdoor space.

Are the events suitable for SEND settings?

Yes. Our events welcome educators from special schools, SEND provisions, mainstream schools, nurture groups and specialist settings.

Activities are designed to be adaptable and inclusive. We regularly explore sensory needs, communication, emotional regulation, movement, confidence, engagement and ways to reduce barriers to outdoor participation.

Please let us know about any accessibility requirements when booking so that we can support you wherever possible.

Are the events suitable for alternative provisions and PRUs?

Yes. Outdoor learning can be particularly valuable for children and young people who may find traditional classroom environments difficult.

Our practical workshops can support engagement, emotional wellbeing, relationships, movement, self-regulation, confidence and purposeful learning.

Ideas can be adapted for alternative provisions, pupil referral units, nurture settings and specialist education environments.

Do I need any outdoor learning qualifications before attending?

No. You do not need any previous outdoor learning, Forest School or outdoor play qualifications.

Our events are designed to build confidence from your individual starting point. We explain the activities clearly, model practical approaches and help you understand how ideas can be safely adapted for your own setting.

Is this Forest School training?

The Muddy Puddle Teacher Approach is not the same as a Forest School qualification.

Our events focus on helping educators use everyday outdoor spaces to support play, wellbeing and curriculum learning. You do not need access to a woodland, fire pit or specialist Forest School equipment.

We use simple, sustainable and affordable resources that schools and settings can realistically access.

Do I need a large or natural outdoor space?

No. You can use many of the ideas in playgrounds, yards, nursery gardens, sports pitches, small outdoor areas and other everyday spaces.

Our training shows you how to make the most of the space you already have using natural materials, reusable equipment and low-cost resources.

Are the events mainly presentations or practical workshops?

Our in-person events are practical, active and hands-on.

There may be short introductions, demonstrations or discussions, but the emphasis is on seeing outdoor learning in action, joining practical workshops and discovering ideas you can use in your own setting.

Live webinars include demonstrations, photographs, examples and practical strategies that can be implemented after the session.

What happens at a Muddy Puddle Teacher festival?

Our outdoor learning festivals bring educators together for a full day of practical workshops, professional development and outdoor inspiration.

Depending on the event, you may be able to:

Will there be different workshops to choose from?

Larger events and festivals may include several workshops or demonstrations taking place throughout the day.

The programme, workshop topics and booking arrangements will be explained on the individual event page. Some sessions may be open for attendees to join, while others may need to be reserved in advance.

Are your events only for schools?

No. We welcome educators from schools, nurseries, preschools, specialist settings, alternative provisions, wraparound care, holiday clubs, charities, community organisations and childminding settings.

Parents and home educators may also be welcome at selected events. Please check the individual event description before booking.

Can school leaders attend?

Yes. Headteachers, deputy heads, Early Years leaders, SENDCos, curriculum leaders and outdoor learning coordinators are welcome.

Attending an event can help leaders understand how outdoor learning can support curriculum development, staff confidence, pupil wellbeing, inclusion and whole-school improvement.

Can several members of our team attend together?

Yes. Schools and organisations are welcome to book places for several members of staff.

Attending as a team can make it easier to share ideas, develop a consistent approach and plan how outdoor learning will be introduced across your setting.

Group booking information will be included on the individual event page where available.

Will I receive a CPD certificate?

A CPD certificate is provided for eligible training events and webinars.

The individual event description will confirm whether a certificate is included and whether you need to attend the full session to receive it.

Can the training count towards my professional development?

Yes. Our training can support your continuing professional development by helping you build knowledge, confidence and practical skills in outdoor learning, outdoor play, curriculum teaching and inclusive practice.

You may wish to record the event within your professional development file and share your learning with colleagues afterwards.

What should I wear to an in-person event?

Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for practical outdoor activities.

We recommend checking the weather forecast and bringing:

Waterproof clothing

Warm layers

Suitable outdoor footwear or wellington boots

Sun protection during warmer weather

A reusable water bottle

Outdoor learning often continues in light rain, so please arrive prepared for changing weather.

Will the event continue if it rains?

Where it is safe to do so, practical outdoor workshops will usually continue in light rain.

Severe weather may require the programme to be changed, moved to a covered area, postponed or cancelled. We will contact booked attendees if significant changes are necessary.

Is food included?

Food and refreshments vary between events.

Some events may include refreshments, while larger festivals may have independent food stalls where attendees can purchase meals, snacks and drinks.

Can you accommodate dietary requirements?

Where catering is included, we will ask attendees to provide dietary requirements before the event.

At festivals with independent food stalls, available options will depend on the individual providers. We will share information about food choices wherever possible.

Can children attend?

Our professional training events are normally designed for adults and educators rather than children.

Children should not attend unless the individual event is specifically advertised as a family event. Please check the event description carefully before booking.

Are the venues accessible?

We aim to select venues that are as inclusive and accessible as possible. However, outdoor spaces can include grass, uneven ground, mud and changing weather conditions.

Please contact us before booking if you have mobility, sensory, medical or other accessibility requirements. We will be happy to explain the venue and discuss the support available.

What happens during a live outdoor learning webinar?

Our live webinars allow you to access practical outdoor learning training from home, school or your setting.

Sessions may include:

Do I need to keep my camera on during a webinar?

No. You will not usually be required to keep your camera on.

You may be invited to contribute through the chat, questions or discussions, but you can participate in the way that feels most comfortable for you.

Will live webinars be recorded?

Recording arrangements vary between events.

The individual webinar page will explain whether a recording is included, how long it will remain available and whether it can be accessed by people who cannot attend live.

Please do not assume that every webinar will be recorded.

What technology do I need for a webinar?

You will need a reliable internet connection and a computer, tablet or suitable mobile device.

Joining instructions and any required links will be sent before the session. We recommend checking your sound and internet connection in advance.

Can we watch a webinar together as a staff team?

This will depend on the ticket or licence you purchase.

Some webinar tickets are for one individual, while other options may be available for whole-school or team access. Please check the booking information or contact us before sharing access with colleagues.

When will new event dates be announced?

Can we book private training instead?

Yes. Schools, nurseries, trusts, councils and organisations can book private in-house outdoor learning training for their own teams.

Training can be adapted to your age group, setting, curriculum priorities, outdoor space and professional development needs.

How do I book?

What happens after I book?

You will receive a booking confirmation using the email address provided at checkout.

Can I transfer my ticket to another member of staff?

Ticket transfer arrangements will be explained within the event’s booking terms.

Please contact us as early as possible if the original attendee can no longer attend and another member of your organisation would like to take their place.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

Who created and delivers the training?

The Muddy Puddle Teacher Approach and training programmes were created by teacher and educational consultant Sarah Seaman.

Training is delivered by experienced, qualified, in-class teachers who understand the realities of working in schools and educational settings. Our trainers focus on practical, realistic ideas that educators can confidently take back to their own children and teams.
