Try This Tomorrow: Circus Ring Multiplication Challenge
Create a large circus ring outside using cones, hoops, chalk or rope. Place 8x and 9x table number cards around the ring.
Children move around the ring in pairs or small groups. One child stands in the middle as the “ringmaster” and calls out a multiplication question, such as 8 x 6 or 9 x 7.
The other children move to find the correct answer card. When they reach it, they say the full number sentence aloud.
For example, “8 x 6 = 48.”
To make it more active, children can move like circus performers. They might balance along a chalk line, tiptoe like acrobats, jump like clowns or spin carefully before answering.
Time: 10–15 minutes.
Prep: Low.
Best for: 8x and 9x recall, active maths, teamwork and confidence.
This is the kind of simple outdoor maths activity that helps children practise multiplication without it feeling like another test.

Try This Tomorrow: Big Top Number Relay
Set up two relay lines outside. One line is for the 8 times table and one line is for the 9 times table.
Place answer cards at the far end of the playground or field. Call out a multiplication question. The first child in each team runs, walks, skips or balances to collect the correct answer and bring it back.
When they return, the team has to say the full calculation together.
For example, “9 x 8 = 72.”
You can make this calmer by asking children to walk, step, tiptoe or move slowly instead of racing. This works well for groups who need the activity to feel more regulated.
To add challenge, ask children to order the answer cards afterwards, spot patterns, explain strategies or create their own 8x and 9x questions for another team.
Time: 10–20 minutes.
Prep: Low to medium.
Best for: fluency, recall, movement, teamwork and multiplication confidence.
