Why do children need to go outside more?

Outdoor learning can solve many educational issues, including speech and language issues and physical and mental health and help children socialise and communicate better.  Due to the change in how the modern-day child plays, more emphasis is needed on a more active curriculum. Children naturally need time to be in their imaginations, playing with friends and moving their bodies. Furthermore, more outdoor learning gives children a love for learning; by teaching outside in more playful ways, we are encouraging children that they can have a fit lifestyle while learning and educating.

How to take a storyboard lesson outside

Place the children in groups of 4 and hand out bamboo canes. The children need to make a 3-box storyboard flat on the floor. In each box, they need to make a picture of the pollination process.

  • Box 1 – A picture of a plant.
  • Box 2 – A pollinator on the plant.
  • Box 3 – The pollinator is flying away.
  1. The children must make these pictures using natural or upcycled PE kits like ropes and cones, flat and 2D on the floor. Hand out chalk pens and stones for children to write captions about what is happening.
  2. Once complete, go into the Muddy Gallery and ask each group to explain their pictures and what is happening in them.
  3. Ask the children to walk around your outdoor are or go for a local walk and hunt for pollinators; keep track of how many pollinators you find. Watch how they get their food and hop from one plant to another, spreading the seeds and helping the plants reproduce. Please talk about the importance of our bees, wasps and butterflies.
