Outdoor Observation Form – Capture the Outdoor Moment

Notice more. Record less. Capture what really matters outdoors.

Some of the most powerful learning moments happen when children move, explore, experiment, communicate, and solve problems outdoors.

They can also be incredibly easy to miss.

The Outdoor Observation Form – Capture the Outdoor Moment helps educators quickly record valuable learning moments without turning outdoor provision into a paperwork exercise.

Rather than trying to write down everything a child does, this simple observation tool encourages you to pause, notice and capture the moments that tell you something important about the child.

What did you notice?

Perhaps a child:

  • attempted something they would normally avoid
  • communicated with another child independently
  • solved a problem without adult intervention
  • demonstrated resilience after something went wrong
  • showed curiosity or deep concentration
  • regulated themselves through movement
  • took an appropriate physical risk
  • experimented with a new idea
  • demonstrated leadership
  • used new vocabulary naturally through play
  • worked collaboratively
  • showed confidence in an area you had not previously seen

These are the moments worth capturing.

Observe the child — not just the activity

Outdoor observations do not need to become long descriptions of what equipment was used or what activity had been planned.

Instead, ask yourself:

What did this moment tell me about this child?

Our Outdoor Observation Form helps practitioners focus on:

The Moment
What happened?

What I Noticed
What did the child say, do, attempt or discover?

Strengths Shown
What skills, characteristics or behaviours were evident?

The Outdoor Environment
Was there something about being outdoors that supported this moment?

Adult Role
Did the adult model, prompt, step back, co-regulate or simply observe?

What Next?
Is there something we could offer, change or revisit to build on this learning?

Outdoor Transition Activity for SEND- Outdoor Me Passport

Capture the Outdoor Moment

Outdoor learning gives us opportunities to see children differently.

A child who struggles to sit and complete a task indoors may suddenly become the problem solver.

A quiet child may become the leader.

A child who finds formal communication difficult may communicate continuously through movement, objects and play.

A learner who regularly needs adult reassurance may independently assess a challenge and decide what to do next.

Those moments can tell us far more than a completed worksheet ever could.

Perfect for:

  • EYFS observations
  • SEND evidence
  • outdoor continuous provision
  • outdoor learning sessions
  • nurture provision
  • intervention groups
  • transition evidence
  • pupil passports
  • learning journals
  • teacher assessment
  • parent conversations
  • staff reflection

Keep observations manageable

You do not need to observe every child every session.

Instead, encourage adults to become skilled observers.

Notice the unexpected.

Capture the breakthrough.

Record the moment that makes you think:

“That tells me something important.”

A photograph alongside one or two thoughtful sentences can often provide much richer evidence than pages of written notes.

A useful question for your team

At the end of an outdoor session, ask:

Who surprised you today?

Then ask:

What did you see outdoors that you might not have seen inside?

These conversations can completely change the way staff understand individual learners.

30 Outdoor Safety Tips for SEND Children

The Muddy Puddle Teacher® Approach

At The Muddy Puddle Teacher®, outdoor learning is not simply about moving an indoor lesson outside.

We use active, playful and purposeful experiences to help children make it, play it, say it and then understand it.

Our observations should reflect that too.

We want to capture children:

doing
thinking
talking
experimenting
moving
connecting
regulating
discovering

Because sometimes the most important learning does not appear on a piece of paper.

It happens in a moment.

Capture it.

Celebrate it.

Build on it.
