Easy Outdoor Science Investigations for Primary Pupils

Science is at its most powerful when children can see it happening in the real world. The outdoor environment provides endless opportunities for observation, questioning and investigation, turning everyday experiences into meaningful learning. These simple outdoor science investigations require little to no equipment and help children develop key enquiry skills such as predicting, observing, measuring and recording.

Outdoor learning allows science to feel active, relevant and exciting — and often sparks deeper curiosity than classroom-based lessons alone.

💧 Puddle Evaporation Investigation

After rainfall, ask children to find a puddle and mark around its edge with chalk. Return later in the day to observe what has changed. Is the puddle smaller? Has it disappeared?

Encourage children to discuss where the water might have gone. Introduce vocabulary such as evaporation, water vapour and temperature. Older pupils can measure the puddle at different times and record their findings.

Learning focus: States of matter, evaporation, weather and the water cycle
This simple investigation links well with wider outdoor science learning about weather patterns and seasonal change.

🌬 Wind Watchers

On a breezy day, give children light natural materials such as leaves, grass or small pieces of ribbon. Ask them to drop the items and watch how they move. Can they tell which direction the wind is blowing? Do some objects move further than others?

Children can compare open and sheltered areas of the playground and talk about how buildings or trees affect wind speed.

Learning focus: Forces, movement, weather and observation skills
Activities like this show how learning outside the classroom helps children understand abstract concepts through real experiences.

🐜 Minibeast Survey

Carefully explore under logs, stones or leaf piles to look for insects and small creatures. Children can tally what they find and compare results from different areas, such as grassy versus paved spaces.

Discuss why certain creatures prefer particular habitats and what conditions they need to survive. Remind children to return creatures gently to where they were found.

Learning focus: Habitats, classification, living things and environments
This type of investigation fits perfectly within outdoor learning activities that promote care for the natural world.

🌱 Plant Detectives

Ask children to compare plants growing in sunny areas with those in shaded spaces. Are there differences in size, colour or number of leaves? Encourage children to think about what plants need to grow well.

They might measure plant height, observe leaf colour, or feel soil moisture in different locations. This can lead to discussions about sunlight, water and nutrients.

Learning focus: Conditions for growth, plant life cycles and adaptation
It’s a powerful way to connect science to real-life outdoor learning experiences.

🌍 Why Outdoor Science Matters

Outdoor investigations encourage children to ask questions, test ideas and make sense of the world around them. They also build confidence in using scientific vocabulary and recording observations in meaningful ways.

Most importantly, science outdoors feels real. Children can see change happening, feel the wind, notice the warmth of the sun or watch living creatures in their habitats. These sensory experiences deepen understanding and make learning stick.
