The Muddy Puddle Teacher - Outdoor Learning for Teachers by Teachers

Our founder and teaching lead, Sarah Seaman, started her outdoor teaching journey as a Level 3 Forest School Leader but found this challenging alongside her own teaching responsibilities. While Sarah loved the ethos of Forest Schools, the workload was unsustainable, costly and needed regular practice to perfect. Above all, it relied on working with small groups and having access to high quality resources. This inspired Sarah to come up with a different approach.

The Muddy Puddle Teacher Approach

Looking for an approach which encouraged children to be more active outside and while also bringing these experiences into the classroom, Sarah combined these  elements together, rather than keeping them so separate. Sarah recognised limitations that schools face, due to limited budgets and resources. As a result, she came up with the Muddy Puddle Teacher Approach. This is a teaching approach that uses the outside to enhance the inside learning. Encouraging teachers out and nature in!

So what is the Muddy Puddle Teacher Approach? How is it different to Forest Schools and other approaches? Well, the MPTA shares a similar ethos as Forest Schools but, in contrast, our methods are very different. One key difference is that we link all of our activities and ideas to the curriculum, using nature and the outdoors in the process. We do not limit ourselves to the outside – we use the inside space too.

As a result, our approach is more academic. In addition, the holistic elements feed in because we use natural and upcycled resources. However, it’s not just children that benefit from Muddy Puddles.  We enable our educators to deliver more impactful lessons for children. In other words, our outdoor lessons also complement all the work our educators do indoors. We take an outside-in approach from an inside-out approach.

For all children

What’s more, TMPT has an incredible impact on less-abled and disengaged children, especially through the outdoor-learning aspect to our approach. These children thrive when using the Muddy Puddle approach. Most importantly, teachers witness impressive academic achievements by simply placing them in calm surroundings and multi-sensory resources.

Sarah Seaman, teacher and mum of two girls, created and founded the Muddy Puddle Teacher Approach in 2018. Sarah has been an innovative practitioner ever since she can remember!

Originally Sarah trained and worked as a Level 3 Forest School Leader for five years but found this approach wasn’t suited to her but appreciated the freedom to explore and question methods of edcuation. This is when Sarah’s focus shifted. She began using the outdoor space more as a purposeful and inspiring place to teach and to gain context.

Teaching outside but also bringing this inside too. It was at this stage she started to blend the curriculums with the outdoors and the outdoors-in. Sarah continued in this experimental stage for a further six years and then left teaching to focus on developing the approach more in-depth and wider afield, across schools throughout the UK.

Developed In Schools

Self-funded and with two young tots at the time, Sarah spent two years working with local schools and focused on teaching solely on how to use the outdoors to enhance the learning inside. During this time, she gained incredible support from parents and the local community who recognised the benefits of her innovative teaching methods. In March 2018, Sarah took the plunge and launched The Muddy Puddle Teacher on Facebook. Impressively, this has now reached a total of 40,000 users and is continuing to grow each day!

It’s clear more than ever that head teachers, teachers, parents and children want and need this approach. Never has there been before an approach for primary schools whereby there are many at nursery level. Through this approach nature becomes the helping hand that every teacher needs. The MPTA also enables children to embrace being outside, using nature, more fresh air, increase their knowledge and learn through engaging methods.

Our whole approach stems from BALANCE.

We believe that, if children spend more time outdoors, it will make indoor learning more appealing to them. Why? Because the more children move around and become active in their learning, the more rewarding they will find their sit-down work. Our approach also teaches children about sustainability. What’s more? Educators lead by example and teach children using only man-made and natural resources.

To help guide our educators, we follow the Muddy Ms:

Muddy Nature means that we use nature as our second teacher

With Muddy Wellbeing, we think of the child’s wellbeing every lesson

We keep our Muddy Movers active

When I set up a Facebook group for teachers in May 2018, I’d no idea that, within three months, I would have almost 30,000 members! Who’d have thought that creating a Facebook group to share my powerful and realistic approach to outdoor learning would be so popular?

Well. it was. Here I am today, the founder of The Muddy Puddle Teacher, an outdoor learning training and resource provider for teachers. Today, I spend my days travelling up and down the UK and working with schools overseas. I share my unique approach to powerful outdoor education that transforms the ordinary into the extra-ordinary.

From CBeebies to The Muddy Puddle

I never imagined that, after a ten-year career in wide-ranging teaching posts, I’d be a founder of my own company! Before teaching, I worked for CBeebies and CITV.  In short, I’ve always had a penchant for learning that’s fun, active and creative!

As a mum to two gorgeous girls, I know first-hand just how precious and impactful every moment of the learning journey is. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the Muddy Puddle Teacher combines all the things I love most about education! That’s learning, children and fun.

Firstly, in 2014, I began noticing the distinct change that the new national curriculum had brought to my classroom. Similarily, my children were spending ever more time stuck inside behind their desks, partaking in passive learning. It felt wrong. Moreover, it was clear that many children were bored with the static, repetitive and predictable nature of learning. In short, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there just had to be a better way.

Subsequently, I left my classroom behind and stepped outside into the unknown! I channelled my passion for dynamic learning into searching for a better solution. After leasing a woodland space – helped by Sheffield Council – I began to develop The Muddy Teacher Outdoor Learning Approach.

From Indoors to Outdoors

Although not a particularly ‘outdoorsy’ person at the time, I consequently discovered this was the solution I’d been looking for. To enable children to thrive, I needed an outdoor environment where they could be free from the constraints of the indoor classroom. In other words, I’d realised how I could develop outdoor alternatives to lessons that were usually taught in the classroom.

It soon became apparent that outdoor lessons using the Muddy Puddle Teacher Approach were the way forward! Following a series of impressive demonstrations, I opened a Facebook group to share my learning with other teachers. The rest, as they say, is history.

For Every Child

Today, one of my greatest joys is to know that the Muddy Puddle Outdoor Learning Approach is an inclusive, child-led and holistic approach that speaks to ALL children. It doesn’t matter whether children have EBD or SEN. Or even if they’re struggling readers, withdrawn children or disengaged learners. Our approach brings back the magic of learning to each and every child. That is the passion that keeps me motivated, each and every day. I’m sure that many of you became teachers in the first place for that precise reason. Therefore, it’s my pleasure to share the Muddy Puddle Teacher Outdoor Learning Approach with you and help give your child an education they’ll never forget.

Enjoy the journey and I look forward to meeting you soon.
