This lesson is ideal for teachers, teaching assistants, home educators and parents supporting children in EYFS, KS1 or SEND settings. The video introduces children to common 2D shapes and the vocabulary used to describe them.
Children learn that a 2D shape is flat and has two dimensions, length and width. They are encouraged to look carefully at each shape, count its sides, notice its corners and compare it with other shapes.
The video can be used as a whole-class introduction, during continuous provision, as part of a maths lesson, in a small intervention group or before taking children outside.
Pause the video whenever children need more time to look at a shape or discuss what they notice.
What Is a 2D Shape?
A 2D shape is a flat shape that has length and width.
The letters “2D” mean two-dimensional. Unlike a 3D object, a 2D shape does not have depth.
Children will often see 2D shapes represented on paper, whiteboards, signs, screens and flat surfaces. They can also see the faces of 3D objects as 2D shapes. For example, the face of a clock may look like a circle, while the front of a book may look like a rectangle.
When teaching 2D shapes, it is helpful to show children examples in different sizes, colours, positions and orientations. A triangle is still a triangle when it is turned upside down, and a square remains a square when it is rotated.

What Are the Properties of 2D Shapes?
The properties of a 2D shape are the features that help us recognise and describe it.
Children can look at how many sides a shape has, whether the sides are straight or curved, how many corners or vertices it has and whether any sides are equal in length.
A circle has one continuous curved edge and no vertices.
A triangle has three straight sides and three vertices.
A square has four straight sides of equal length and four vertices.
A rectangle has four straight sides and four vertices. Its opposite sides are equal in length.
Depending on the age and stage of the children, teachers may introduce additional shapes such as pentagons, hexagons, octagons, semicircles, ovals and quadrilaterals.
The emphasis should be on children looking closely, comparing shapes and explaining what they notice.
Circle Properties
A circle is a round, flat shape.
It has one continuous curved edge and no straight sides. A circle does not have any vertices.
Children may find circles on clocks, plates, drain covers, wheels, hoops, lids and playground markings.
It is useful to show children circles in a range of sizes so they do not associate the shape with one particular object.
Triangle Properties
A triangle is a flat shape with three straight sides and three vertices.
Not all triangles look the same. Some are tall and narrow, some are short and wide, and some have sides of different lengths.
Showing children a variety of triangles helps prevent them from believing that a triangle must always have one point facing upwards.
Children may notice triangular roof shapes, road signs, bunting, climbing-frame sections and patterns in fences.
Square Properties
A square has four straight sides and four vertices.
All four sides of a square are equal in length.
Children sometimes confuse squares and rectangles. It can help to place the shapes next to one another and encourage children to compare the lengths of their sides.
Squares may appear in paving stones, playground markings, tiles, windows, signs and storage boxes.
Rectangle Properties
A rectangle has four straight sides and four vertices.
Its opposite sides are equal in length. A rectangle usually has two longer sides and two shorter sides, although a square is also a special type of rectangle because it meets the mathematical definition.
For younger children, it is usually enough to focus on recognising rectangles and noticing that opposite sides match.
Children may find rectangles in doors, windows, bricks, benches, books, signs and playground equipment.
Why Teach 2D Shapes Outdoors?
Outdoor learning gives children the opportunity to see maths in a meaningful context.
Instead of only identifying a shape on a flashcard, children can find, touch, trace, build and photograph shapes in their surroundings. This can make mathematical vocabulary easier to remember.
Taking shape learning outside can also support children who find it difficult to sit still, concentrate on a worksheet or understand an abstract image.
Children can walk around a playground, compare objects, work with a partner and use their whole bodies to create shapes.
Outdoor maths can help children develop shape recognition, mathematical vocabulary, observation, comparison, problem-solving, communication, movement and confidence.

Your Muddy Mission: Go on a 2D Shape Hunt
After watching the video, take the children outside for one simple Muddy Mission.
Ask them to find examples of circles, triangles, squares and rectangles in the outdoor environment.
Children can point to the shapes, name them, photograph them, sketch them with chalk or record them on a clipboard.
Encourage children to explain how they know which shape they have found.
They might say:
“I know it is a triangle because it has three sides.”
“This drain cover is a circle because it is round and has no corners.”
“The door is a rectangle because it has four sides, with two long sides and two shorter sides.”
Keep the activity playful and avoid correcting every answer immediately. Ask questions that help children look again.
You might ask, “How many sides can you see?”, “Are the sides straight or curved?”, “How many corners does it have?” or “Can you find another shape with the same number of sides?”
Build 2D Shapes with Outdoor Materials
Once children have completed the shape hunt, they can build their own 2D shapes using simple outdoor materials.
Sticks can be used to create shapes with straight sides. Rope can be arranged into larger shapes. Chalk can be used to draw shapes on the playground. Children can also make the outline of a shape using stones, leaves or cones.
Building shapes helps children understand their structure.
A child making a triangle must think about the number of sides needed. A child creating a square needs to notice that the four sides should be equal.
Avoid expecting natural objects to be perfectly straight or identical. The discussion and problem-solving are more valuable than creating a perfect shape.

Make Giant Shapes with Children
Children can work together to make large 2D shapes using their bodies.
Ask a small group to lie down or stand along the sides of a shape. Alternatively, place a long rope on the ground and invite children to rearrange it.
This works particularly well for exploring the difference between straight and curved sides.
Children may discover that creating a circle requires a curved line, while making a triangle requires three straight sections joined at three vertices.
Large-scale shape activities support teamwork, language and physical development alongside mathematical understanding.
Supporting Children with SEND
Some children may find it difficult to remember shape names, count sides accurately or distinguish between similar shapes.
Keep the language clear and introduce only a small number of shapes at once.
Allow children to touch, trace, move around and build each shape. Repetition through different experiences can be more effective than repeatedly showing the same flashcard.
Visual shape cards can be taken outside so children can match a picture with an object in the environment.
Children who find open-ended searches overwhelming may benefit from being asked to find one specific shape. For example, “Can you find one circle?” is more manageable than “Find all the shapes you can see.”
Children who communicate non-verbally can point, match, sort, photograph or place an object beside the correct shape card.
The activity can also be completed in a smaller outdoor area or with a familiar adult.

Questions to Ask During the Activity
Effective questioning helps children move beyond simply naming a shape.
Ask children how they know which shape they have found, how many sides it has, how many vertices it has, whether the sides are straight or curved and what is the same or different about two shapes.
You can also ask whether a shape would remain the same if it were turned around, whether they can find a larger or smaller example and whether they can build the shape using natural materials.
Children do not always need to answer immediately. Give them time to look, move around the object and discuss their ideas with a partner.
Extending the Activity
Older or more confident children can search for pentagons, hexagons, octagons and different types of quadrilaterals.
They can sort photographed objects according to their properties or create a simple outdoor tally showing how many examples of each shape they found.
Children could investigate whether some shapes appear more frequently in the built environment than in nature.
They can also compare regular and irregular shapes or explore lines of symmetry using chalk, string and natural objects.
The activity can lead into discussions about 3D objects and the 2D shapes visible on their faces.

Play the short 2D shapes video before your maths lesson.
Take the children outside and challenge them to find one circle, one triangle, one square and one rectangle.
Bring the class together and ask each group to share one shape they found and explain how they recognised it.
Finish by using sticks, chalk or rope to build one large shape together.
